Good news and bad news

Bad news first. The Redskins lost to the Lions. Because of this, I will not be reading the sports section this week or watching any DC sports shows this week.

Now the good news. This weekend, I had the unique opportunity to attend an athletic event at the United States Naval Academy. It was a soccer match. And it was no ordinary soccer match, it was Army. The football match-up gets the most attention, but the rivalry is consistent no matter what the sport. So it was a fun and really competitive atmosphere. And it rained. The entire match. And regulation ended in a 0-0 tie, so they went to sudden death overtime (two 10 minute halves). Navy won in the first OT half on a penalty kick. And when they converted on the kick, the entire Navy team stormed the field. You see, this was the first win for the Navy men over Army in soccer in four years. Navy seniors had never beaten Army. Until Saturday night.

What I liked best, was after all the celebrating was done, they played the Army alma mater song, followed by Navy's "Blue and Gold." The latter ending with a raucous "Beat Army!" It was also really neat to see midshipmen out supporting the squad in what I believe was their dress whites.

I can only imagine how electric the atmosphere is for the football game......
