I've got a question for my readers. Here it is:
Will you eat a meal in a restaurant by yourself? Why or why not?
It's probably more applicable for single folks than for marrieds, but everyone's welcome to comment.

I'll start by saying that I don't mind eating a meal by myself in a restaurant. I'm not a super-social person, so I don't need someone everywhere I go. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to have some good conversation, but if I'm hungry and I want to eat out, I'm not going to let a lack of people stop me from eating out. Now it may cause me to eat somewhere less expensive (i.e. Atlanta Bread), but I'm still eating. But there is one caveat. I won't eat dessert by myself. That I'll take to go. I can't explain that, except to say perhaps it's more fun eating sugar with others. I dunno.

So how do you feel? Will you ask for a table for one?

I will eat by myself at a cafe type thing where I can bring a book or my laptop or something, but I will not eat at a service restaurant. That being said. When I went to the Alps for a weekend by myself I needed to eat and restaurants were my only real option. So I have eaten by myself but don't like it at all. I get very very lonely.

Maybe I am a lonely guy...

I'm not a super social person either so eating alone is standard for me. But, I do feel creeped out in crowded restaurants because sometimes people stare at folks dining alone like we're odd so I'll just order to go if it's too busy.

On a side note....what about movies or concerts even? Is it the same? Me, I go to movies and concerts by myself ALL the time no problem, but some people will miss a great movie simply because they don't have anyone to go with.

I can somewhat relate to feeling creeped out, but not quite. Last night when I went out to Red Robin and asked for a table for one, the hostess said "How did that happen?" I wasn't quite sure how to handle that. So after the long pause, I just told her it was a long story.

If I have the money I'll see movies by myself. No problems there. But I think I view concerts as social-musical experiences. If my friend had been at the Jars show, he would've acknowledged the murky sound and we could have discussed favorite songs and how Dan Haseltine pranced around the stage. I just think a concert is better when you have someone to talk about it with afterwards. I don't think anybody would've minded if I hadn't shared my opinion about X3.

I hate being stared at, so if I have to eat alone, I opt to eat at a cafe type place or the bar of a restaurant. And I will bring something to read - even if it's a trashy People magazine.

As for movies - I'll wait until they're on tv. I usually have to pee halfway through anyway, so I like being able to pause and go.

And just to follow up since a couple of folks have mentioned it, if I'm eating alone, I will bring something to do. Tuesday night I brought a notebook and worked on goals for 2007 as well as a list of the Christmas gifts I'd like to get various people.

I also don't mind going to Damon's by myself to watch football or basketball in the clubhouse.

Good call. Yes, I too do not mind eating in crowded restaurants that have sports being televised. Come to think of it, crowded steakhouses don't creep me out either. Especially if they let you throw peanutr shells on the floor. I haven't thought of taking something to do with me, but that might just work.
