An Occasional Cookie

Tonight I thought I'd write about one of the newer businesses in town. It's a little bakery called An Occasional Cookie.

As their name implies, they make cookies. And nothing else. And they're pretty good cookies. You can check out their website here. They are currently featuring a strawberry pie cookie as well as a cherry tart cookie. (I should note that all the fruit used in these cookies are purchased from Paulus Orchards in Dillsburg. Yay for using local farmers! Below is a picture of the chocolate and peanut butter chip cookies that I picked up this morning. They were very good. This is what they looked like:

If you stop by, tell her "the marathon guy" sent you!

I hit a deer tonight...

The day was going well. I was on my way back from a graduation, when a deer decided to take a stroll across 15. I was able to slow down, but not enough. Boom. Car meet deer.

So now theoretically, I need a new headlight. Boo. But God is good. There was no other traffic around me and so I basically had the whole road to work with and even time to gather my wits after impact. And I'm hopeful that I'll just need a new headlight and maybe some bolts tightened.

Stay tuned!

Something's Different

Here's a photo from a month ago:

And here's a photo from yesterday:

Notice anything missing? There are no cars in the second photo. As of this weekend, Times Square has gone sans automobies. It's not permanent yet, but if it gets favorable feedback, you can expect it to be made permanent.

New York City

Next Saturday, 06/06/09, a bunch of folks from the office are taking a bus up to NYC for the day. We happen to have a few seats available that we are trying to fill and I thought I would see if anyone local was interested in coming along. Or perhaps you know of someone who be interested. The cost is $35.00. If you're interested, drop me a line!

It was a good week.

Hello Friends!

Most weeks are good weeks, but there are some weeks that are, for lack of a better term "well-marked." Here's the day-by-day rundown:

Sunday - heard some good live jazz, went to a handbell concert and caught up with an old friend
Monday - niece's dance recital
Tuesday - Thursday - Company meeting out-of-town that allowed me to stretch my professional chops AND stay in a Sheraton for two nights. Also, I had some excellent raspberry cheesecake.
Friday - Chick-fil-A!!

God is good and while he shows me that all the time, this week was pretty exceptional.

Finally, it's Memorial Day weekend. If you know any veterans, please let them know you appreciate their service.

Have a great one!!

Alumni Directory

Heads-up! I got a yellow postcard in the mail over the weekend saying the following:
Dear (Your Name Here),
We are currently in the final stages of preparing Messiah College Alumni: Today, the first publication ever to feature directory listings along with photos and essays submitted by alumni. We need your help! A brief telephone call will ensure your listing is completely accurate and up-to-date.
Please give us a call at your convenience within the next two weeks so that we may verify your information with you.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation in making this publication a success.
Jay McClymont
Director of Alumni & Parent Relations
Messiah College
What I did not realize in my naivete, was that someone (Harris Connect LLC) was selling this directory. The hardbound commemorative-edition was offered to me for two payments of $44.95, or I could have CD-R for the same price. Or, there was a softbound edition available for two payments of $34.95. And if those two options don't work, I could get a custom CD-R of alumni listings for my class along with the two preceeding and two succeeding classes for $24.95.

None of those options worked for me. If anyone orders this, could I borrow it sometime? I'd be interested in seeing what it looks like. Thanks!

Over the weekend, we had a Mother's Day Mexican Extravaganza. I made a Tres Leches cake. Here is the photographic proof:

I did it (and if you haven't already, you can too!)

Many years ago, I had the fantastic opportunity to climb to the top of the Statue of Liberty and take in the view from the crown. I do not have photographic proof of my visit, but I can tell you that the spiral staircase seemed to go on without end and that it was really neat to see the inside Lady Liberty's skin.

In 2001, the crown was closed off to visitors for security purposes. But I'm happy to report that the crown will reopen to visitors this summer, starting on 07/04/09. More details here. If you have the opportunity to go, please do. The steps will take a bit out of you, but it's a neat experience. Definitely worth it.

C'mon Church!

So there's this thing going around called the Swine Flu. There have been 141 cases of this flu here in the states. Where our population is over 300,000,000. That's like a .0000047% infection rate. And people are freaking out. I can understand folks freaking out if they don't have their faith in the right place. But when the Church starts freaking out, I get a little bummed.

I was stunned to hear that the Catholic Church in Mexico had temporarily closed up shop. No mass. No mas. Check out this link about some of the steps that various churches are taking here in the states.

Thoughts?
