Good news and bad news

Bad news first. The Redskins lost to the Lions. Because of this, I will not be reading the sports section this week or watching any DC sports shows this week.

Now the good news. This weekend, I had the unique opportunity to attend an athletic event at the United States Naval Academy. It was a soccer match. And it was no ordinary soccer match, it was Army. The football match-up gets the most attention, but the rivalry is consistent no matter what the sport. So it was a fun and really competitive atmosphere. And it rained. The entire match. And regulation ended in a 0-0 tie, so they went to sudden death overtime (two 10 minute halves). Navy won in the first OT half on a penalty kick. And when they converted on the kick, the entire Navy team stormed the field. You see, this was the first win for the Navy men over Army in soccer in four years. Navy seniors had never beaten Army. Until Saturday night.

What I liked best, was after all the celebrating was done, they played the Army alma mater song, followed by Navy's "Blue and Gold." The latter ending with a raucous "Beat Army!" It was also really neat to see midshipmen out supporting the squad in what I believe was their dress whites.

I can only imagine how electric the atmosphere is for the football game......

Ah, the spectacle of it all..

Today, I made my annual trip to the York Fair. It was the last day of the fair, and admission was free (thank you Weis Markets!), so I headed down. The bonus was that it was an absolutely gorgeous day. I had planned on taking some pictures and the weather was perfect for picture takin'.

So I was trying to figure out what photo I could use to sum up my experience. And I couldn't settle on one. So I picked three.

This place made awesome cinnamon buns. My timing was impecable, as I was able to get the illustrious center bun. And you could watch them making the cinnamon buns through the window on the far right. Rest assured, that Paula Deen would be proud of the amount of butter used.

This is somewhat representative of the variety of people that you see at the fair (they are not all punk rockers).

And this photo represents the vast merchandise empire on display at the fair. There will always be Bob Marley and Korn merch available at the fair, along with jewelry, hot tubs, kitchen knives and sham-wows.

Cool Vid

Hey friends!

I wanted to wish you a great weekend and point you towards this video. Besides being a neat video from an artistic perspective, I hope you find it to be spiritually encouraging.

Have a great weekend!

It is done.

I went for a run today, along with almost a thousand other folks. Thirteen point one miles.

The race started just a little after 8:00am and we managed to get to the start mat about a minute after the starting gun went off (or was it a horn?). I ran with two other folks for about the first mile, until it became evident that their pace was just a bit quicker than my pace. So I threw in my earbuds and cranked up the Hillsong United. I was feeling pretty good, when I switched to Switchfoot around mile eight. My brother-in-law (who was not running the race) met me just before mile ten to run the rest of the race with me. I had to make a quick bathroom stop during mile eleven, and then booked it for the finish line. I was very grateful for the strangers who cheered me on, along with family and friends who made me feel like a rock star as I hit the finish line.

Would I do it again? Possibly. But I'd like my next distance run to be somewhere a little more interesting and scenic. Until then, I'll probably just stick to 5K's.

Things I've been thinking pt. I

During Bible study this week, I had a thought: The disciples were dense. Or maybe just ignorant. I was reading through Matthew and Mark and I found it remarkable the number of times that "the disciples didn't understand." I was sharing this with my group, and the comment was made that that sounds kind of like us.

And that got me thinking about how ignorant we can be sometimes in the things of God. We try to live lives that honor God, but we don't have time to read the Bible. And if we aren't reading the Bible, we're not seeing the instructions that Jesus has actually given us. And the trickle-down is that the "Christian" lives we're living turn out to be rather inaccurate.

Have you read your Bible today?

Doing anything on Sunday morning?

I'll be running myself ragged for roughly 150 minutes or so on Sunday morning. You are cordially invited to come out and watch. I will be accepting words of encouragement and high-fives. Here's a map of the race course.

If you can't make it, I'll gladly accept your prayers in place of your presence.

The Return of the Blog and other notes

I'm currently about 1600 miles away from home. Watching Gilmore Girls. And getting paid for it. Anywho....

I've decided to restart on old blog that has been dormant since 2005. Feel free to bookmark My Phone Takes Pictures. I plan to use it to document my travels in situations where I don't feel like writing out an actual post. So Stay tuned.

Also I'm reading a new book. It's a book that I don't think anyone would have thought that I would have read. Myself included. But long flights demand hefty reading opportunities.

Also, Chick-fil-A is giving away free chicken sandwiches on Monday (09/07) if you show up to one of their restaurants wearing apparel from your favorite athletic team (sorry Steeler fans, you're excluded).
